Major League Baseball Establishes Inaugural Lou Gehrig Day

Honoring the Yankees Legend and Raising Awareness for ALS

Boston Red Sox to Host Inaugural Event at Fenway Park on June 8

Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced the establishment of its inaugural Lou Gehrig Day, which will be celebrated sportwide on June 2. The day will honor the legendary New York Yankees first baseman and raise awareness and funds for the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Lou Gehrig, known as "The Iron Horse," played for the Yankees from 1923 to 1939 and set numerous records, including 2,721 consecutive games played. In 1939, he was diagnosed with ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord.

As part of the inaugural Lou Gehrig Day, the Boston Red Sox will host a special ALS Day at Fenway Park on Tuesday, June 8. The Red Sox will recognize the Frates family, who have been instrumental in raising awareness and funding for ALS research through the Pete Frates #3 Fund. Pete Frates was a former Boston College baseball player who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 and passed away in 2019.

The Red Sox will also host a special pregame ceremony honoring Lou Gehrig and his legacy. The team will wear special Lou Gehrig patches on their uniforms, and fans will be encouraged to wear blue, the color associated with ALS awareness.
