The flags of Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela: A shared history

The flag of Gran Colombia

In 1822, the new country of Gran Colombia adopted a flag of unequal yellow, blue, and red horizontal stripes. The flag was based on Francisco de Miranda's tricolor, which served as the national flag of the First Republic of Venezuela. The three bands of Venezuela's flag have the same width, and eight stars in the middle of the blue band form an arc.

The flags of Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela

The flags of Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela can all trace their roots to the flag of the nation of Gran Colombia (1819-1830), a short-lived republic. The flags of Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela are similar in that they all are made up of horizontal stripes of the same color and order, but they are not identical.
