Yankees avoid injury scare, take series opener in San Diego against Padres

Soto's solo homer in the 6th inning broke a 2-2 tie, giving the Yankees the lead for good

The New York Yankees avoided a major injury scare and took the series opener against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night, thanks to a solo home run from Juan Soto in the 6th inning.

Soto's homer came after he left the game in the 4th inning with a left calf injury. He returned to the game in the 6th inning and hit a 1-0 sinker from Padres reliever Emilio Pagan over the wall in left field.

The Yankees took an early 2-0 lead on a first-inning home run by Aaron Judge and an RBI single by Gleyber Torres in the 2nd inning. The Padres tied the game in the 4th inning on a two-run homer by Manny Machado.

The Yankees bullpen held the Padres scoreless over the final three innings to secure the win. Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect 9th inning to earn his 10th save of the season.

The Yankees improved to 44-16 with the win, while the Padres fell to 33-27.

## Soto's injury scare

Soto left the game in the 4th inning after he appeared to tweak his left calf while running to first base on a groundout.

Soto was examined by the Yankees' medical staff and was initially diagnosed with a left calf strain. However, an MRI exam on Wednesday revealed that Soto has a Grade 1 left calf strain, which is the least severe grade of calf strain.

Soto is expected to miss 10-14 days with the injury.

## The Yankees' bullpen comes through

The Yankees' bullpen has been a major strength for the team this season, and they came through again on Tuesday night.

After starter Jameson Taillon allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings, the bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to secure the win.

Chad Green, Miguel Castro, Lucas Luetge, and Aroldis Chapman combined to allow just one hit over the final four innings.
